It’s Never Just One Diagnosis When It Comes to Chronic Illness

Dr. Nafysa Parpia

Chronic illness is multifactorial – with many causes – and is highly personalized in its manifestation.

When it comes to chronic illness there are typically multiple diagnostics as root causes in each patient. Multiple systems in the patient are affected including the body (genes, organs and the immune system for example), as well as the mind and the spirit.

Looking deeper into the root causes of chronic illness is not a part of the mainstream medical system.

Typically when doctors can’t find a cure for your symptoms, they assign what we call a wastebasket diagnosis to the set of symptoms.

Patients who have wastebasket diagnoses usually have many chronic infections, a high load of environmental toxins, structural integrity issues, and emotional factors putting them into sympathetic overdrive, immune dysregulation, and generalized inflammation.

These diagnoses include:

It’s a similar story that I see play out in most of my patients.

They come to me to treat mold, for example, and the testing I then order uncovers many other layers of illness that need to be factored in before I can begin detox strategies.

I wrote a previous blog about the 5 steps to take before starting a detox protocol. These 5 steps are simply a start, a standard approach. To detox with chronic illness, you need a personalized approach that includes advanced testing and multiple layers of treatment to ensure that you are able to efficiently release and remove the toxins from your system, without recirculating them.

My pre-tox method is a highly personalized process designed to prepare an individual for detoxification therapies. It is specific for each patient to unlock their ability to detox.

Conditions that need to be treated prior to detoxification:

Decreasing Inflammation Is Key

Inflammation is a byproduct of the detoxification process.

If a patient already has a high inflammatory cytokine load, it is not the appropriate time for detoxification therapies. We need to first investigate what is driving the inflammation, then mediate it. Patients with chronic illness are stuck in loops of inflammation.

Inflammation is meant to be transient – the signals are meant to be turned off once the threat is addressed. With multi-causal and multi-system illness, inflammation is no longer transient- it is constantly being created by the immune system which has become dysregulated.

Ready To Get Started?

These are all the things I consider when taking a patient history before treatment in order to run the appropriate labs and fully personalize care. No matter what diagnosis brings you to my doorstep – I start the process the same way – investigating your personal root causes and their manifestations in your body, mind, and spirit.
