Finding a Home Away from Home while Receiving Treatment

What to Take into Account when Traveling to Northern California

Booking Accommodations
Some helpful things you should know

Please keep in mind that Marin County is a popular tourist destination, and often hotels and vacation rentals book up in advance. Plan your trip 3-6 months in advance whenever possible.

We have a list of any place we have heard positive feedback from our patients about.  Patients have very different needs when they travel, and depending on budget and who may be traveling with them, those needs change.

Hotels in our area run up to $300+ for the Casa Madrona in Sausalito, and prices are higher on weekends.

Vacation rentals are great options and often patients will use vrbo.com or Airbnb.com to book a local space.  The owners may be open to negotiating if you are booking a longer stay.   Many people in Marin County are conscious about using natural products etc., but it is still important to talk about your allergy issues with the owner of the property.

Vacation rentals are often pre-paid and rarely do they refund if it does not work out.  Vacation rentals vary from a low of $75/night to thousands.

Marin county includes San Rafael, where our office is, as well as Corte Madera, Greenbrae, Kentfield, Larkspur, San Anselmo, Mill Valley, Larkspur, Sausalito, and Novato, all within close proximity. Usually places closer to San Francisco are more expensive.

Weather

Northern San Francisco Bay Area Weather

Marin County’s natural beauty and moderate temperatures seldom dip below freezing, even in the winter. The area’s 25 – to 30 – inch annual rainfall happens primarily from November through April. While California frequently has drought, when it rains here it can rain heavily. Coastal areas frequently have fog.

Coastal Weather

Temperate year-round, the weather on the Marin Coast follows a pattern of maritime fog in the morning which  gives way to California sunshine around noon. When inland valleys heat up, the coast remains cool. The weather can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended. The temperatures are significantly warmer in the north and east, the west and south are cooler. Even a few miles can make a difference in temperatures, so plan for change. This is especially important for patients who are temperature sensitive.

Current 7 Day Forecast in San Rafael

January – Average High /Low

Coast: 56 F (13 C) / 35 F (2 C)

July – Average High /Low

Inland: 90 F (32 C) / 52 F (12 C)
Coast: 80 F (26 C) / 48 (8 C)

What to Wear

Check the local weather before you depart. Temperatures can vary from the coast to inland each day. Wine country casual is fine for evenings out, while jeans, khakis or shorts, T-shirts, comfortable walking shoes, a sweater, and a medium-weight jacket should suffice for sightseeing. Think layers. A chilly, foggy summer morning may heat up to the 80s or 90s by 2 p.m. Temperatures start to drop after the sun goes down. In winter heavy coats aren’t necessary, but you’ll want a medium-weight water-resistant jacket.

Places to Stay in Marin County

We have spoken with each of the hotels listed, and they all say that when a guest is calling in to make a reservation, they should ask that the room be fragrance free. There are not designated rooms, but these rooms will be cleaned without products with fragrance before the guest arrives and during their stay.
